Why Is My Drain Clogged?

What causes drain clogs? It seems like one is always clogged somewhere in the house and you can never locate the plunger when you need it. Here are a few common reasons why drains get clogged and a few things you can do to minimize the chances of getting a clog in the first place.

What Causes Sink Clogs?

Clogs in the kitchen and bathroom sinks often occur because of food particles, hair, and other foreign objects such as Q-tips, toothpaste caps, and loose jewelry. Kitchen sink drains are full of grease and food particles that manage to slip past the sink trap and accumulate on the inside of pipes. This narrows the openings of the drains and causes slow draining and eventually clogging completely.

To prevent clogs in the kitchen and bathroom, install sink traps. It seems almost inevitable that something is going to go down the drain so it might be smart to remove your rings and other loose jewelry before washing hands or doing dishes.

For grease clogs, pour hot water and a teaspoon of dish soap down the sink regularly to prevent grease buildup.

What Causes Most Toilet Drain Clogs?

Toilet clogs are commonly caused by objects that are not meant to be flushed like baby wipes, feminine products, cotton swabs, toothbrushes, and toys. If you have toddlers in the house, this is a common problem. Toddlers love to throw toys in there and watch them swirl down into the drain.

To prevent clogged toilets, make sure that the only things going down your toilet are #1, #2, and toilet paper. Anything else will eventually cause you problems. Keep a trash can near the toilet for non-disposables and make the bathroom a no toy zone for your little ones.

The Main Reason For Clogs

The piping under your house can be equated to roads crisscrossing in all directions at once. Big pipes reduce down to smaller pipes where it is easy for things to get stuck on the way and cause a backup.
