What do you know about green living? Do you picture living off the grid without modern conveniences? Does being environmentally friendly seem like a good idea, but a lot of work? You might be surprised to learn that going green is easy.
It’s because becoming green is the culmination of small choices in your everyday activities at home, work and play that can add up together to improve the planet. Don’t be daunted by making a change. You can make a difference and here is how. Here is a guide on how you can make the planet a little greener, from our team here at S&D Plumbing.
Change to Eco-Friendly Water Fixtures
If you are trying to reduce your water consumption, you could take shorter showers. But there is a way to reduce water use and still enjoy a high-pressure, full lather shower.
Install low-flow showerheads that keep water pressure good, but control both the amount of water that you need to use and the amount of water that you need to heat, which is why they are green.
The other water use bandit in your home is your toilets. Consider low-flow models there too, or check out a dual flush toilet. This type of toilet lets you control if you need a little or a lot of water to flush.
Start on Earth Day
What better day to mark the beginning of your shift to green living than on the day that we celebrate Mother Earth? Mark your calendar for April 22.
Plan to attend Austin Earth Day festivities at Huston-Tillotson University. There will be a lot of celebrating and a chance to learn about how you can make a difference. There will be keynote speakers, music, outdoor activities, workshops, food, kids’ activities and a recycling station.
Get Busy Reducing Your Carbon Footprint
Give back to the planet by reducing your carbon footprint. Do you have a smartphone? Of course, you do. Unplug the charger when you aren’t charging it. Use a laptop computer instead of a desktop.
If you have a car, consider switching to a hybrid option. Always make sure that your tires are inflated so that you get better mileage. Use your microwave oven instead of your regular oven.
Tankless Water Heater
Want to help the environment and save money at the same time? Switch your traditional storage tank heater over to a tankless model.
A tankless model will save money because it is more operationally efficient and they generally have a longer lifespan, which means less maintenance money.
A traditional storage tank heats water and then stores it. Often that water will cool while it is sitting, which means that you need to expend more energy. A tankless model works on demand to deliver just the right amount of hot water when you need it.
To really help the earth, break the habit of buying plastic water bottles. They are pricey and also are very bad for the environment.
You can easy install an effective water filter either at the point of use (i.e. on your faucet) or for your whole home (i.e. at your water source). The result will be high-quality water that isn’t damaging to the planet.
