The Most Common Clogs In Toilets

For many homeowners, dealing with a clogged toilet can be difficult and frustrating.

By knowing what the most common toilet clogging materials are, however, individuals will know what to not throw away into their toilets.

Sanitary Items

Many plumbing professionals believe that the vast majority of all clogs in the household come from sanitary items, such as tampons and napkins.

Because many of these items contain strong fibers, such as cotton, they may snag in the pipes if there are any cracks or root infiltrations.

Homeowners are strongly encouraged to throw away these items in order to avoid problems in the future. Not only are these items quicker to snag, but they also do not wear away in the water as quickly.

Toilet paper is weak enough to deteriorate in water, but tampons and napkins are not. These clogs will require professional help, especially if the plumbing system is older and has not been cared for in a while.

Homeowners will simply not have the equipment readily available to handle such problems, and if they are left untreated, they can result in expensive plumbing work.

Baby Items

Baby wipes and baby diapers should never be thrown into the toilet. While it may seem strange to some to throw away diapers in the toilet, there are many people who regularly experience plumbing problems because they do not dispose of baby diapers properly.

Both baby wipes and diapers contain strong fibers and dense materials that retain their structural integrity as they pass through the sewage system.

What this means is that not only does water not wear down hard enough to deteriorate these items, but their solid forms can snag much easier in older pipe systems, resulting in deeper clogs.

In the most extreme scenarios, the diapers can actually cause damage to the pipes themselves by clogging them so tightly. All individuals should make sure to get rid of their diapers and baby wipes safely by throwing them in the trash.

Floss

Finally, all individuals should get rid of dental floss and other small strings by throwing them away in the trash.

Many people do not expect dental floss to cause large problems but because the floss is so strong, it can actually get stuck in pipes for months.

This relatively strong obstruction can usually be enough to cause deeper plumbing problems, as many other items can snag against the dental floss, resulting in larger obstructions.
