Conventional Tank vs. Tankless Water Heaters

Conventional Tank vs. Tankless Water Heaters

Home energy costs are continually rising. More and more people are seeking ways to reduce costs and increase energy efficiency. A conventional tank hot water heater is a home energy waster. A tankless hot water heater can help to save money through increased energy efficiency.

The tankless or also known as an on demand water heater is designed to heat only the water needed at the time of use. They are available in both electric and gas models. Use of a tankless water heater can reduce the cost of energy use by up to 50% of a conventional water heater.

The reduced cost can be attributed to efficiency and life of the tankless heater. Unlike coventional heaters that store water in a tank, the on demand heater has no tank. Through the use of technology, it heats water only when it is used. Conventional tanks heat water more frequently.

A conventional tank is constantly using energy to keep the water hot. The temperature of the water in the tank is reduced through radiant heat loss. This requires the tank to use energy even when no hot water is being used.

Conventional tanks do not handle water sediment well. Because the water is being held in a tank, the sediment will corrode the internal parts. Additional energy will be consumed because the thermostat is not able to sense the true temperature of the water. A tankless system is able to handle water sediment keeping operation at optimal efficiency. Tankless heaters are also able to be set at a lower temperature than conventional heaters.

Conventional heaters are typically set at very high temperatures to reduce hot water recovery time. Not only does this require more energy use, it causes a potential burning hazard to anyone using hot water. With a tankless system, the temperature is set lower, reducing the chance of accidental burns.

Conventional heaters also take up a large amount of space. This is not true with a tankless model. A tankless model will free up space that could be used for other things.

People are begining to move to the use of tankless water heaters. They have many advantages over a conventional heater. The main advantage is the energy cost savings. They are also more efficient and smaller than conventional heaters. The temperature on a tank heater can save money and eliminate accidental burns.
